Identity

I wrote this poem to describe the different voices that Satan takes in our culture to tell people who they should be. I got the ideas for  each stanza from  people that I've observed.

Voices
echo around her,
shrouding her mind,
telling her who she is:
"Incapable, misguided, and worthless."

Fears
hold her heart
dominating her thoughts
telling her who she is:
"Alone, silent, and unseen."

Pains
build walls around her,
closing her eyes,
telling her who she is:
"Tormented, broken, and  hopeless."

Memories
wash over her,
sapping her strength,
telling her who she is:
"Imperfect, vulnerable, and lost."

God
whispers in her ear,
asking for her heart,
telling her who she is:
"Beautiful, loved, valuable, to die for, His daughter."

  1. I like it! It's so true. People have all these hidden identities that tell them secretly in their minds what they are. At the same time, God is whispering in our mind his truths and we need to choose what to listen to: God's truths or the evil one's lies. On the serface it's easy to say, " I would never follow those lies, it's stupid", but then we believe them without even knowing it sometimes. Very good thoughts.

  2. You made me cry--in public! I need to read this everyday. How persistent our enemy can be, but Oh! how consistent our God is!
